Library Protection Training

Layne Consultants International (LCI), in conjunction with the International Foundation for Cultural Property Protection (IFCPP), announces this special program opportunity for libraries in any U.S. location:

  • Violent Crime is up in many regions, based on local crime statistics and a survey of institutions throughout the country.
  • Public libraries are often victimized by persons with substance abuse problems, mental disability, or anger management problems.
  • Reduced staff along with budget reductions often affects the library’s ability to improve personal as well as electronic security.
  • Theft of library assets, to include book collections, video cassettes, CD’s, and other assets continues to plaque most institutions.

LCI and the IFCPP have combined resources in response to numerous requests, offering two exceptional workshops to help library staff better protect themselves, visitors, and the assets of the library.   LCI has provided protection assistance for hundreds of libraries and cultural institutions, including frequent workshops at ALA, LAMA, PLA, and many state and regional library organizations.  IFCPP is the world’s only non-profit cultural property protection association and recognized source for professional training.

Program 1:  A half-day workshop which thoroughly covers the steps necessary to properly select and maintain cost-effective, properly serviced, professionally monitored electronic protection systems.  Plain English – we’ll help you determine the right electronic systems for your facility, how to find a qualified system vendor, and how to assure of fair pricing and service costs.  Libraries now use contract security officers, proprietary security officers, off-duty police officers, or none of the above.  How do you decide what combination works the best, and is most cost-effective?  We’ll show how to make that determination, then how to go about finding the right service to serve your institution.

Program 2:   All of the above, plus…a two hour hands-on program of self-defense FOR LIBRARIANS!   That’s right…self-defense.   How do you protect yourself, or others, from a person who becomes assaultive?  Yes, call the police…but what about right now?   This is not a quickie martial arts class, but a reasonable orientation on how to avoid physical confrontations, and when they are unavoidable, how to avoid injury.  Also included is our step-by-step procedural guideline for ejecting unruly patrons.

Both programs include:  Our popular guideline, “The Cultural Property Protection Manual” (.pdf version), our newly released Policy/Procedures Packet, and a program summary handout packet.

Location:  These programs may be presented at any location.  Host agency must provide a suitable facility with adequate seating for participants.  Classroom style seating is preferred.

Costs:  Each half-day session, when presented separately, are offered at $2,500, plus reasonable travel expense reimbursement.  When both sessions are presented simultaneously on the same day, a package fee is offered at $4.500 plus reasonable travel expenses.
