Proudly present: The Reality of Threat Assessment and Response

ASIS International 56th Annual Seminar & Exhibits – Pre-Seminar Intensive Proposal

This full day workshop takes emergency management and planning to a new level.   We consistently hear about "threat analysis," "risk management," and other descriptions of programs that set forth professional guidelines to deal with crisis.    This program introduces the concepts involved in determining realistic threats facing any facility or institution and proceeds through the "best practices" methodology of analyzing and mitigating those threats.   Experienced professionals in emergency management will lead attendees through a practical, hands-on exercise in dealing with crisis situations.

1.     Threat Perception – Determining the type and level of threat your facility faces.  From self-analysis to contracted threat assessment, the best practices in making a realistic appraisal of your ability to survive certain threats.

2.     The Company Team – How to put together a workable team with the ability to consistently monitor the environment, staff, and the company’s preparations in dealing with each.

3.     The Plan – Taking an objective look at the perceived threats, your available assets, and making a determination on how the company can and will respond.  Involves in depth research into budget, physical assets, electronic assets, staffing, and training.

4.     Response Coordination – Taking “call 911” a step beyond, especially if emergency agencies are tied up elsewhere.   Includes the conduct of facility tours, in-depth meetings with response agencies, and looking at alternatives when agencies are delayed.

5.     Business Continuity – An objective plan on how to carry on business functions in the face of adversity or major disruption needs to be formulated and finalized.  This is a major enterprise to be addressed separately as well as a part of the overall emergency action plan.

6.     Emergency Preparedness – It’s one thing to store supplies and materials at the office.  What about staff caught in route, at home, or unable to return home.  The company should assume some responsibility in helping all employees prepare to deal with crisis incidents.  The plan needs to encompass more than just supplies.

7.     Emergency Exercise – Fire drills aren’t enough.  Beginning with a properly developed tabletop, developing into an all agency participatory exercise, the emergency plan needs to have a “hands-on” walk-thru with all employees involved.

8.     Critique and Review – It’s difficult at best to count on everything going right, in the organization, planning, operational exercise, training, or implementation.  The results of each phase of plan implementation need documentation, review, critique, and adjustment.

Sessions 1-5 will be covered in the first portion of the workshop, and sessions 6-8 will be presented in an audience interactive tabletop exercise.

Our tabletop exercise presents a number of scenarios with solutions provided by attendees, working under supervision of program facilitators.  Attendees will take home the knowledge and experience of dealing with actual situations.   The workshop also helps prepare attendees for the next step, a full-blown physical exercise with emergency agency participation.
